Dr. Shamell Bell is a homeschooling mother, community organizer, critical-engaged pedagogue-educator, dancer/choreographer, and documentary filmmaker. She is the visionary behind the “Street Dance Activism” movement and the Global Dance Meditation for Black Liberation. The 2023-2024 bell hooks center Resident Teacher Scholar at Berea College, Dr. Bell has held appointments such as Full-Time Lecturer of Somatic Practices and Global Performance at Harvard University. Previously, she served as a visiting lecturer of African and African American Studies and Theater at Dartmouth College. She has also worked seasonally at California State University East Bay and Los Angeles, as well as UC Santa Cruz, teaching in Ethnic Studies as well as Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She currently serves as an Arts & Culture liaison between several social justice organizations and consults as a social justice expert in the entertainment industry. Her TV credits include Cultural Historian and Supervising Producer of the AppleTv+ series “Lessons in Chemistry,” and she is the Chief Social Impact Strategist for actress and poet Dominique Fishback. In the music industry, Dr. Bell has worked with Common, Lalah Hathaway, and Grammy award-winning musician Esperanza Spalding. Her work is activated by the statement, “As we dance our lives together, we are lifting frequencies and vibrations that, with action, will create a shift in the world.”
