Discover the Poetry and Art of Puerto Rico with Friday Finds

This year Berea College’s Special Collections and Archives will honor Hispanic Heritage Month 2023 with an exhibition of Manuel Joglar Cacho’s 14-stanza poem, “Por Los Caminos del Día” (Along the Paths of the Day”) in Hutchins Library foyer gallery. Joglar Cacho (1898–1994) was a celebrated Puerto Rican poet whose book of poems first appeared in 1925. In 1969, his “Por Los Caminos del Día” was published as a series of 16 prints illustrated by Puerto Rican linoleum print artist José Antonio Torres Martinó (1916–2011). This notable work of 20th-century poetry and art (signed copy 93 of 250) is part of the Berea College Special Collections and Archives.

The exhibit “Por Los Caminos del Día: Poetry and Art of Puerto Rico,” is part of Friday Finds, a program where a series of public tours are provided to explore the holdings of Hutchins Library's Special Collections and Archives department. “Some of the events are opportunities for the community to experience rare books and regional or topical publications up close—actually handling them and viewing them at their own pace. Others are guided tours of Special Collections and Archives exhibits,” said Tim Binkley, head of Special Collections and Archives. 

The dual mission of this program is to expand awareness of Special Collections and Archives holdings and to show the campus community, neighbors and out-of-town visitors that they are welcome here. 

“The cultural treasures that we steward are for the use of all,” Binkley added. 

Friday Finds tours for the “Por Los Caminos del Día: Poetry and Art of Puerto Rico,” exhibit will take place at 10 a.m. on Sept. 15, 22, 29 and Oct. 6 and 13. The exhibit will also be open to view during the Hutchins Library operation hours.
